Sometimes when we talk about the Sabbath, we speak of “keeping” it and of “obeying” the Sabbath commandment. These are good biblical terms, and they’re certainly appropriate, but all too often they are terribly abused. Keeping the Sabbath is not something we do to earn God’s favor and a mansion in heaven by and by.
The Sabbath is a gift of grace, wholly undeserved and given freely to all. God means it to bring with it the joy of our rescue from sin and pain. Sabbath keeping is our response to God for that grace
